Freedom Film Network office raid – an attack on free speech

Aliran condemns the recent police raid on the offices of the Freedom Film Network, following the screening of an animated short Chilli Powder and Thinner.
This is an attack on freedom of expression and expression as enshrined in our Federal Constitution.
The home of cartoonist Amin Landak, who was involved in the production of the controversial film, was also searched. He and Anna Har, co-founder of Freedom Film Network, had both been called to Bukit Aman for investigations into the film.
The film is based on the story of a person who was allegedly tortured, along with his two friends, in police custody. It aims to raise awareness and concern about deaths in custody.
Authoritarian action by the authorities is a crude form of censorship that does not bode well for human rights defenders and those involved in the media and the arts.
We call on the police to cease any further investigation of the two individuals who were simply exercising their democratic right.
