Laugh at the outrage over ‘sexy seahorses’ – but there is nothing funny about the Conservatives trying to rewrite history | Arwa Mahdawi
Conservatives triggered by sexy seahorses
As we all know, there is nothing that right-wingers love more than free speech and nothing they hate more than “cancel culture”. People should be able to say whatever they want without fear of censorship, the Conservatives are constantly screaming. Unless, of course, if these people say things they don’t agree with. In which case: shut them up immediately and ban their books!
The latest absurd example of a conservative cancellation culture comes to us from Moms for Liberty, a right-wing advocacy group that tries to dictate what books Tennessee public school children can read. I’m not sure if any of these moms have a dictionary, but they might want to look up the definition of “freedom”. And then they might want to change their name to Moms for Thought Control.
The moms were very methodical: they sent the Tennessee Department of Education a detailed spreadsheet outlining their complaints about books being forced on their children. It makes reading unintentionally hilarious. A book on Galileo is “anti-church”. A seahorse book contains too much detail about seahorse mating rituals. A book on Native Americans “divides” and “portrays whites in a negative light.” A book about Ruby Bridges, the first black child to enter an all-white public elementary school, is “divisive.” (Racists love to use the word “divider,” have you noticed? How dare you talk about slavery and segregation! You divide!) A book on Greek mythology is a bit too “graphic and scary.” A book on Martin Luther King contains “photographs of political violence”. The whole reads like the delirious delusions of a book club in hell.
There are, of course, pushy parents everywhere. If Moms for Liberty were just a fringe group of overly involved mothers, their beef with the Tennessee Department of Education wouldn’t really matter. Sadly, their attempts to revamp the Tennessee program are part of a much larger effort to rewrite American history. Over the past year, American conservatives have become obsessed with “Critical Race Theory” (CRT); Media Matters recently noted that Fox News mentioned the phrase over 1,900 times in less than four months. None of the people who rave about CRT are actually able to explain what the academic concept means; to them it just means anything less than flattering about whites. Which they say should be illegal. At least eight Republican states (including Tennessee) have introduced laws restricting how race can be taught in public schools this year; The Brookings Institute notes that nearly 20 more states have introduced or are planning to introduce similar legislation. The Moms for Liberty spreadsheet was compiled shortly after Tennessee banned teachers from teaching anything that teaches that “an individual, by reason of race or gender, is inherently privileged, racist, sexist or oppressive, whether consciously or unconsciously “. books which the group claims violate this law.
Far from being a wacky fringe band, Moms for Liberty is part of a very well-coordinated cultural war. Whether it’s abortion or CRT, the playbook is always the same. Right-wing media stoke outrage; deliberately vague laws are passed as a result of this contempt; advocacy groups are diligently militarizing these laws at the local level. “We see what appear to be coordinated efforts to challenge the books, not just on the basis of the content of the individual book, but on the basis that they teach history from a particular point of view,” he said. said a cadre of the National Coalition Against Censorship. The daily beast. “We also see entire lists of disputed books, as opposed to individual titles. “
So what’s the moral of this story? Basically, you shouldn’t underestimate the law. It’s very easy to laugh at a bunch of right-wing moms hugging their pearls against sexy seahorses – but there’s nothing funny about the systemic and organized way conservatives are trying to rewrite history and restrict freedom of expression.
Male CEOs are best paid when they have deeper, “manly” voices
A new study has shown that the lower your voice, the higher your pay. The researchers analyzed voice samples from male CEOs and found that a one standard deviation increase in “vocal masculinity” was associated with a 6.6% increase in total salary. Why? Probably because we have evolved to associate deep voices with strength. Margaret Thatcher was well aware of this: she took speaking lessons to make her voice sound deeper. And we all know Elizabeth Holmes’ baritone.
Are women safe on the streets of London?
A few months ago, Sarah Everard was murdered on her way home to a friend in London. Her death sparked a nationwide outcry against violence against women. It was revived following the tragic murder of Sabina Ness, 28, who was killed as she walked five minutes between her London home and a pub last Friday night. While Ness is now making headlines, the little attention the case initially received has come under criticism. “When black and minority women are killed, our society looks away,” said the co-founder of Our Streets Now.
New study will explore the impact of space travel on the female body
There is a huge data gap in this area that scientists are now trying to fill. To do this, they wrap brave volunteers in a cotton sheet and waterproof tarpaulin, then hang them in an immersion tank, leaving their arms and heads alone.
India opens doors for women to attend elite military academy
The Indian Supreme Court has set a deadline for the admission of women to the prestigious National Defense Academy. While this is being celebrated, I find it hard to see more female soldiers as progress of any kind. Bombs dropped by women remain bombs!
Mexican TV host who offered Tom Brady a wedding dress is on the run for allegedly embezzling $ 146 million
I’d 100% watch a movie based on that New York Post title.
The week in panda-archy
Tired of Tinder? Bored of Bumble? Rather be home alone on the couch with Netflix than bother with dates? Pandas know how you feel. A new study has found that if a panda finds a comfortable place to relax, it doesn’t bother to leave it to try and find a mate. While pandas are no longer in danger, researchers fear their low libido and lazy ways may be their death.
