SATURDAY 3:00 p.m. BST: ISRAELI AERIAL STRIKE DESTROYES GAZA MEDIA BUILDING
A tower which is the base of the international media in Gaza was hit by an Israeli bombardment, causing it to collapse.
The strike came an hour after people were told to evacuate the building.
Al Jalaa Tower, which houses foreign media – Al Jazeera and the Associated Press news agency, among others – was hit twice by Israeli bombing around 1:15 p.m.
No deaths have been reported.
PA correspondent in Gaza, Fares Akram, said earlier that the building was the only place in the city where he felt safe, as the Israelis called it a media base.
PA CEO Gary Pruitt called the strike “incredibly disturbing”, saying the company was “shocked and horrified”.
âWe narrowly avoided a terrible loss of life. A dozen PA journalists and freelancers were inside the building and luckily we were able to evacuate them in time. The world will know less about what is happening in Gaza because of what happened today. “
The White House said in a statement that the safety of journalists covering the conflict in Gaza was “a primary responsibility.”
An IDF spokesperson said: âThe building contained civilian media offices, behind which the Hamas terrorist organization is hiding and using as human shields. The Hamas terrorist organization is deliberately placing military targets in the heart of densely populated civilian areas of the Gaza Strip. “
