TX GOV approval crumbles as COVID deaths skyrocket
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s job approvals recently declined as he struggles to bring COVID under control in his state. Despite being a Republican governor in a Republican state, Abbott’s approval rating has fallen to 45%, well below his high level of 59% before the pandemic. COVID deaths in the Lone Star State are increasing dramatically, with 300 to 400 daily deaths now the norm. Abbott made a point of removing COVID restrictions early on in order to thwart the Biden administration, and he has been a vocal opponent of the mask and vaccine warrants. To make matters worse for Abbott, he is running for re-election in 2022 and must wage a war on two fronts. Texas GOP President Allen West runs against Abbott in the primary and criticized him for shutting down the state because of COVID in the first place. If Abbott survives the main challenge, he could face former US Congressman Beto O’Rourke, who reportedly weighed a race. This Texas run is going to be one of the biggest contests in the 2022 midterm election and if the ballot is tight, Democrats should do all they can to land the governorship in the nation’s second largest state. .
